In the past few months, Rep. Jamie Raskin (MD-08) has joined Democrats running for Congress across the country. He’s established himself as a formidable presence on the campaign trail, both as a speaker and fundraiser.
This summer alone, Raskin has visited Colorado, Iowa, Michigan, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. He’s raised over $3 million for Democratic candidates this cycle and is still fundraising for “critical swing races” ahead of the midterms.
“When people invite me somewhere, if I believe I can be of assistance in any way, I go,” Raskin told Punchbowl News. “Even in what’s traditionally considered a Republican district, I go.”
Raskin first became a more established campaign trail presence for Democrats during the 2024 election cycle, when he stumped for former President Joe Biden, former Vice President Kamala Harris, and other candidates in over 20 states. His prominence as the Democrat who led the impeachment charge against President Donald Trump in 2021 made him an attractive speaker at campaign events, including the Democratic National Convention.
If Democrats retake the House from Republicans in November, Raskin is in line to chair the House Judiciary Committee, the body that, among other responsibilities, monitors and investigates federal agencies, including the White House.
The Judiciary Committee can also initiate impeachment proceedings against the president. During an appearance on Meet the Press, Raskin told host Kristen Welker that Trump had “undoubtedly” committed impeachable offenses, including declaring war on Iran without Congressional approval.
Raskin didn’t directly answer whether he would initiate impeachment proceedings against the president. Instead, he said Democrats would be prioritizing “ending the lawlessness” of the Trump administration and facilitating access to health care.
“Impeachment is not a taboo with us. It’s not a fetish with us. We understand it’s not a panacea,” Raskin said. “It is a tool in the toolbox. We will not hesitate to use it if we need to use it.”
