The Democratic nominee for Senate in Texas, James Talarico, looks to be getting backup from party leadership as his lead in the polls holds steady just over a month ahead of election day.
While Democrats have become weary of getting their hopes up when it comes to statewide races in Texas, Talarico has been either led or been tied with his Republican opponent, Attorney General Ken Paxton, in every poll since August 13 in the key Senate race. The most recent survey, from Marist, has Talarico leading Paxton 50% to 44%.
Now, Democratic Party leadership appears to be planning more financial resources for the race. A recent filing at the Federal Election Commission noted the creation of a new super PAC, Texas Forever, which has ties to the Senate Majority PAC, a committee aligned with Sen. Chuck Schumer, the leader of the Democrats in the Senate.
While it remains to be seen what resources Texas Forever will deploy in the state, its creation is a signal that Talarico will have support from party leaders in the final stretch of the campaign. That could be helpful given the fact that the Texas Senate race is shaping up to be among the most expensive this cycle – and in the history of Senate campaigns.
Talarico’s campaign has already raised some $69 million and spent $46 million of that, according to FEC filings. Paxton has raised a comparatively small $9 million, and has spent $7.5 million, though the Republican has already received help from groups aligned with President Donald Trump to the tune of tens of millions of dollars.
